More than 80 HKBU students participated in the 2024-25 “Community Engagement Organisers: Elderly Empowerment Programme” co-organised by the Leadership Qualities Centre of the Office of Student Affairs and the Providence Foundation. They reached out to communities in Chai Wan, Sham Shui Po, Shek Kip Mei, and Wong Tai Sin, serving a total of 170 elderly people.
To encourage the elderly to broaden their social circles, cultivate new interests, and embrace the challenges of ageing, the programme offered a variety of activities, including workshops on Chinese medicine acupoints and ageing fitness, as well as a Turkish marbling art workshop. The elderly also attended the student-produced short film showcase sharing the history and stories of Kowloon City.
Through regular home visits, student volunteers delivered a total of 210 care packs and completed nearly 140 tailored home-improvement solutions for the frail elderly, including household cleaning, applying anti-slip coatings to bathroom floors, refurbishing furniture, purchasing household appliances and arranging home maintenance.
Wong Siu-hong, a student from the School of Chinese Medicine participating in the programme, said that the programme has strengthened his communication with the elderly and nurtured his empathy, allowing him to appreciate the importance of improving home environments to enhance the elderly’s quality of life.
In this semester, the programme recruited student volunteers to continue reaffirming its commitment to promoting active ageing, enhancing the elderly’s quality of life, and strengthening their bonds with the community.
