The 15th National Games, co-hosted by Guangdong Province, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and the Macao Special Administrative Region, commenced on 9 November. Held every four years, this prestigious event represents the highest-level and the largest-scale multi-sport event of the Nation. Over 25 HKBU student athletes and alumni are competing in events across Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, vying for honours against elite athletes from across the country.
So Hei-wa and Cheung Ka-long participate in torch relay and cauldron lighting
So Hei-wa, a student of the School of Chinese Medicine, served as a torchbearer during the Torch Relay in Hong Kong for the 15th National Games on 2 November. He was the only Chinese medicine student among the 50 torchbearers in Hong Kong.
He said: “Serving as a torchbearer and representing Chinese medicine students at the National Games is both an honour and a responsibility. The motto of HKBU’s School of Chinese Medicine, ‘Sincerity in Service.Erudition and Integrity’, has always motivated me to equip myself and serve the community. I will continue to encourage young people to care about society and national development across different roles.”
Cheung Ka-long, a student of the Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education and Recreation Management programme and a two-time Olympic gold medallist, lit the cauldron on behalf of Hong Kong at the opening ceremony of the 15th National Games at the Guangdong Olympic Sports Centre on 9 November. He was one of the three representatives chosen to light the cauldron at the ceremony.
He said: “When I was young, I used to watch the cauldron-lighting at the Games’ opening ceremonies on television. I never imagined that, years later, I would be the one lighting the flame. It feels truly surreal.” He previously served as the flag bearer at the opening ceremony of the 13th National Games and was excited to be a torchbearer for the first time.
Cheung Ka-long wins one gold and one bronze in men's foil
Cheung Ka-long also returned to the National Games podium following his success in 2017. In the Men’s Foil events held at the Kai Tak Sports Arena, he clinched the bronze medal in the individual event on 16 November, and captured the gold medal with his teammates in the team event on 19 November, making history by winning the Hong Kong, China fencing team’s first-ever National Games gold.
Chiu Chun-yin and Chan Sakurako win karate medals
HKBU student athletes delivered outstanding performances in the mass participation karate competitions at the 15th National Games, held at the Fórum de Macau. Chiu Chun-yin, a student of the Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education and Recreation Management programme, won silver in the Men’s Team Kata (Amateurs) event alongside his teammates on 6 November.
Chan Sakurako, a student of the Bachelor of Arts in Film and Television programme at the Academy of Film, clinched gold in the Women’s Team Kata (Amateurs) event with her teammates on 8 November.
Alumna Yan Nuo wins shuttlecock bronze
HKBU alumni also participated actively in the 15th National Games. Yan Nuo, an alumna of the Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education and Recreation Management programme, secured a bronze medal in the shuttlecock mixed doubles at the mass-participation competition held in Zhaoqing on 18 August with her partner.
Matthew Yu Chun-yin sweeps three gold medals in wheelchair dance
Following the 15th National Games, the 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities and the 9th National Special Olympic Games will be held from 8 to 15 December. Some mass participation events were staged earlier.
Matthew Yu Chun-yin, a student of the Bachelor of Arts in Sports Industry Management programme, achieved remarkable success at the wheelchair dance competition held at Ma On Shan Sports Centre on 6 and 7 September. He won three gold medals in Combi Latin Dance 3-Dance, Combi Latin Dance 5-Dance, and Group Dance.
HKBU student athletes have demonstrated exceptional determination and delivered outstanding performances across various competitions, bringing immense pride to the entire HKBU community.
