Fu Rong, a third-year journalism student at HKBU, has managed to strike an enviable balance between sports and academics. As a successful triathlete and an aspiring sports journalist, Fu has stayed true to both her passions, splitting her time between athletic training and sharing her insights on competitive sports.
Fu’s journey as an athlete has not always smooth sailing. During her secondary school years in Guangzhou, she was a heptathlon champion until a chronic ankle injury cut short her athletic career. Life took on a different turn when she moved to Hong Kong to study, where she reignited her enthusiasm for sports and retrained for triathlons. Since then, she has gone on to win multiple provincial and Asian triathlon championships.
With her unique background in sports and her studies in journalism at HKBU, Fu was offered the opportunity to be an intern reporter for the Guangdong Radio and Television Station, covering sports in Hong Kong and Guangzhou, including the recent 15th National Games.
Fu highlights that her experience as an athlete has helped her empathise with the challenges faced by athletes, from the pressure of competing to their mental struggles. While covering the National Games in Hong Kong and Guangzhou, she focused on uncovering the untold stories of the athletes. “It’s not just about winning; it’s about sharing the human stories behind the competition,” she explains.
Like mother like daughter, Fu’s decision to study journalism in Hong Kong was mostly influenced by her mother, who was also an ardent sports journalist.
Fu already has plans to combine her enthusiasm for sports with a doctoral pursuit in Sports Psychology. Her goal is to better understand athletes’ mindsets and advocate for a healthier balance between their mental health and performance.
“We need more journalists who understand the psychological and physical demands placed on athletes,” Fu urges, advocating for the need to prioritise well-being alongside competition.
