HKBU student athletes dazzle at the National Games

Over 25 HKBU student athletes and alumni competed in the 15th National Games, demonstrating grit and athletic prowess on the national stage and making Hong Kong proud.

Striving for new heights

Cheung Ka-long wins one gold and one bronze in the Men’s Foil events.

Cheung Ka-long, a student of the Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education and Recreation Management programme and a two-time Olympic gold medallist, returned to the National Games podium following his success in 2017. He won bronze in the Men’s Foil Individual event, and clinched the first-ever gold medal in the Men’s Foil Team event at the National Games with his teammates, marking a historic breakthrough for fencing in Hong Kong, China.

Other student athletes also delivered outstanding performances in the mass participation karate competitions. Chan Sakurako, a student of the Bachelor of Arts in Film and Television programme at the Academy of Film, clinched gold in the Women’s Team Kata (Amateurs) event with her teammates, while Chiu Chun-yin, a student of the Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education and Recreation Management programme, earned silver in the Men’s Team Kata (Amateurs) event alongside his teammates.

Following the 15th National Games, the 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities and the 9th National Special Olympic Games will be held from 8 to 15 December. Some mass participation events were staged earlier. Matthew Yu Chun-yin, a student of the Bachelor of Arts in Sports Industry Management programme, achieved remarkable successes by winning three gold medals in the wheelchair dance competition, exemplifying exceptional talent and determination.

 

 

HKBU alumni were equally outstanding, with Yan Nuo, an alumna of the Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education and Recreation Management programme, securing a bronze medal in the shuttlecock mixed doubles.

Inspiring pride and excellence

Professor Alex Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU extended his heartfelt congratulations and commended the athletes for their commitment: “At this year’s Games, HKBU student-athletes spared no effort in striving for excellence across various events. HKBU will continue to stand alongside all our student-athletes, supporting them in achieving excellence in both their academic and sporting pursuits, and continuing to bring honour to Hong Kong, China.”
