The Government's announcement on the establishment of Hong Kong’s Third Medical School

Regarding the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region’s decision on the establishment of Hong Kong’s third medical school, Professor Alex Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), expressed his respect for the decision and extended his sincere congratulations to The Hong Kong University of Science of Technology on securing the recommendation to establish a new medical school. He wishes HKUST every success in nurturing a new generation of medical talent.

Dr Kennedy Y H Wong, Chairman of the Council and the Court of HKBU, said: “HKBU will continue to stay committed. We will strive to develop Hong Kong into an international health and medical innovation hub. We will continue to contribute to Hong Kong’s healthcare system and the wellbeing of our citizens through different means, such as biomedical research and technology translation, the training of healthcare professionals, as well as the provision of clinical services. In addition, HKBU will continue to play the important role of promoting Chinese medicine development and fostering Integrated Chinese-Western Medicine services, including being the contractor of The Chinese Medicine Hospital of Hong Kong (CMHHK). With its operations to commence in phases on 11 December, CMHHK will collaborate closely with medical schools in Hong Kong to strengthen the scientific research on Chinese medicine, and play the role of a “change driver” to promote the development of Chinese medicine in Hong Kong, the Greater Bay Area and around the world.”

Professor Alex Wai said: “The Frontier Translational Medical Research Institute, established alongside with the new medical school proposal preparation, will continue to develop as a hub for advanced research and development in medical science and healthcare, placing great emphasis on innovations, technology translation, and real-life application.”

“I would like to express our heartfelt thanks to all the members of our Preparatory Committee and Expert Advisory Committee for the New Medical School at HKBU, the Council of the University, as well as all the supporting institutions and professionals from Hong Kong, the Greater Bay Area, the Chinese Mainland, and the world for their trust and support of our proposal submission,” added Professor Wai.
